This music toy from Playgo is called, in full, My Upbeat Rainbow Keyboard. On the front are six chunky keys in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, each with a raised shape on it, and above them a row of small buttons. Behind the keys stands a rainbow under a clear dome, with little balls that move along as soon as something happens.
For a child who has just turned one that is a pleasing discovery: pressing makes a sound, and at the same moment the balls start to dance. The unit plays single notes and familiar nursery tunes, so a baby notices that the sound comes from its own hand. The keys are big enough to hit with a flat hand or a whole fist, which at this age is still the most ordinary way to play.
The box states 12m+. The keyboard runs on 3 AAA batteries and is light enough to take along to the playpen, the play mat or grandma's kitchen table.
A rewarding present for a first birthday, or for children who bang on anything that makes a noise - better on something that is meant for it.
