This jigsaw belongs to Hinkler's Mindbogglers range, in which every puzzle shows a photograph of a well-known place. Here that is Zaandam in the Netherlands: a row of green wooden houses with red roofs, a windmill on the bank, cows in the grass and an evening sky turning pink and blue, all mirrored in the still water in front of it.
The box holds 1000 pieces. Finished, the puzzle measures 69 x 54.6 cm, so count on a table or a puzzle mat of at least that size. The many shades of green and above all the reflection make sorting by colour harder than the picture suggests, and that is exactly what makes a puzzle of this size worth the trouble.
Good to do in stages, at the kitchen table or over one long evening. Start with the roofs and the mill, where the clearest lines are; save the water for last.
A quiet present for someone who likes puzzling, and certainly for anyone with a connection to the Netherlands or to the Zaan region.
