Woblet is a word game from the publisher Baeckens Books. The box holds 72 blocks in pale pine: each one carries a large letter on one side and a second letter on the other, with a small letter showing what is on the back. There are also six cardboard screens and a series of cat's-head cards with game variants.
The basic game is simple. Everyone takes blocks, sets up their screen and tries to be the first to lay a word of a certain length. Whoever finishes first wins the round - there is no need to keep score, which makes it quick to play in a spare moment.
Each card gives a different variant, from building a crossword to playing against the clock, and they rise in difficulty. That way the game grows with a player who is only just learning to recognise letters right up to practised word players at the same table. The letters are chosen so that they serve in several languages; woblet.eu has rules in Dutch, French, English, German, Spanish and Italian.
According to the publisher, one to six people can play. A present for a family that likes sitting round a table together, and a game you can also lay out on your own.
