'Ik leer tegenstellingen' is a box from Jumbo's ik leer range holding 12 puzzles of two pieces each. Every pair shows two images that are each other's opposite, with the Dutch word printed underneath: a girl who is awake beside a girl who is asleep, a cake with lit candles beside a cake with the candles blown out.
The two halves click together like puzzle pieces, with the word in a coloured bar under the drawing. 24 opposites come up in all, spread over six learning games. Your child lays out the pairs, you read the words aloud, and along the way they start naming what they see.
The box states 2+ and 'basisvaardigheden ontwikkelen', developing basic skills. Jumbo adds four goals: describing pictures, recognising opposites, making connections and building vocabulary. The describing is the most rewarding of them, because the pictures hand you something to talk about together.
A fine first learning game for toddlers who are busy collecting words, and a present that needs no explaining: open the box, pieces on the table, off you go.
